Mens Handicapping Procedure
A players Exact Handicap is his handicap calculated to one decimal place.
A players Playing Handicap is his Exact Handicap calculated to the nearest whole number (0.5 is rounded upwards).
The Buffer Zone is the margin within which an exact handicap remains unchanged.
Handicaps are divided into the following categories, each with a Buffer Zone
Category 1 - Handicaps 5 or less Buffer Zone 0 to +1
Category 2 - Handicaps of 6 to 12 Buffer Zone 0 to +2
Category 3 - Handicaps of 13 to 20 Buffer Zone 0 to +3
Category 4 - Handicaps of 21 to 28 Buffer Zone 0 to +4
A Qualifying Competition is any competition in which Medal Play Conditions prevail and a CSS is calculated.
A Qualifying Score is any score including a no return returned in a Qualifying Competition
The Nett Differential is the difference (+ or -) between the nett score returned in a Qualifying Competition and the CSS after the application of Clause 19.8
The Standard Scratch Score (SSS) is the score allotted to an 18 hole golf course and is the score that a scratch player is expected to return in ideal conditions over a measured course.
The Competition Scratch Score CSS) is the adjustment that may be necessary to the SSS to take account of weather and course conditions and must be calculated for all Qualifying Competitions.
Clause 19.8 - All holes completed, the players Nett Differential is reduced by the number of strokes taken on any hole in excess of nett double bogey. For holes with no score recorded, a score of nett double bogey is entered.
Alteration of Handicaps
If a player after the application of Clause 19.8 returns a score with a nett differential within the Buffer Zone the handicap is not changed.
Above the Buffer Zone or records a no return the exact handicap is increased by 0.1.
Of less than zero the Exact Handicap is reduced by an amount per stroke being determined by the Handicap Category as follows
Category 1 = 0.1
Category 2 = 0.2
Category 3 = 0.3
Category 4 = 0.4
Mens Handicapping Policy
The attached Mens Handicap Policy document has been produced to help Gentlemen Members gain a greater understanding of the Handicapping System.
It is the Handicap Committees' intention to add content to it regularly so that it will become a point of reference.
If you believe that there is a Handicap topic that you think the Handicap Committee should cover please let one of us know. The names of the current handicap committee are shown on the last page of this booklet.

Junior Handicaps
A list of current handicaps will be displayed on the Junior Notice board. Girls needing a handicap to play in a Competition should consult the Lady Member of the Junior Committee. Boys requiring a handicap should contact the Junior Chairman.
Under the Ladies Handicapping system there is no provision for Junior handicaps. Girls must follow the rules of the Ladies Handicap system i.e. return 3 cards over 18 holes to gain an official L.G.U. Handicap.
However it is recommended that girls do not actually return scores for handicapping purposes to gain an L.G.U. handicap until they can achieve a standard on the course approaching a 45 handicap.
If a Junior girl has not yet attained a handicap or is unable to complete 18 holes, she may be given a CLUB HANDICAP to encourage her to improve her standard. (LADIES SECTION CONDITION 15).
A girl who has not reached her 12 th birthday on 1 st January, and is unable to complete 18 holes to attain an official L.G.U. handicap may return 2 cards over 9 specified holes (1, 2, 3, 4, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18.) to gain a CLUB HANDICAP.
For our own internal Club Competitions beginners may have a handicap of Boys 42, and Girls 45.
Girls will play off the Red Tees against the Ladies Scorecard CSS 74
Boys if under the age of 14 and with a handicap between 29 and 42 may also play off the Red Tees.
When achieving a Handicap of 28.4 or lower, Boys will then play from the Yellow Tees. Their handicaps will be adjusted in line with the Men's Section, but in a downward direction only.
When they reach a Handicap of 12.4 or lower they will then play off the White Tees, and a full system of handicapping will take place (Handicaps going up or down). Handicaps will be altered at all times against a CSS for Boys of 71 and for girls a CSS of 74.
Boys who attain a handicap of 9.4 or less, may if they wish, play in the Men's Club Competitions, on payment of an 18 year old subscription. They may not enter sweeps, or in the event of winning, buy drinks for fellow competitors.
They must also fulfil the men's handicapping requirements as follows
A Junior Member who qualifies to play in the Senior Club Competitions, must first establish his handicap as a Senior Player by submitting 3 cards to the Chairman of Handicap who will then allocate him a senior handicap.
He must then play in at least 3 minor Club medal rounds before he may win a prize in a major Club competition.
Junior girls attaining a genuine 45 handicap may play in all Ladies Competitions, subject to the handicap restrictions of the individual competition. They must also play with a Full Lady member, with the exception of the L.G.U. medals.
Junior girls under 18 years of age may only be allowed in the Ladies Lounge when accompanied by a Full Member (Ladies Section Condition 14).
