The Julia Greenhalgh Salver
In the Ladies section, in terms of golfing achievement, there is one outstanding name - Julia Greenhalgh, the daughter of Charles and Mildred Greenhalgh and niece of Eileen Shutt. Her record of successes spans over 20 years, commencing in 1960, when she became British Youth Champion. In 1961, the year her mother was Lancashire Ladies Captain, she won the Lancashire Championship for the first time, became the L.G.A. Northern champion and was selected to play for England.
Her record reads:"She won the Open Amateur Stroke Play in the 1970s twice running, in 1974 and 1975. She also won the English in 1966 and 1979 and the Welsh Stroke Play in 1977. She won the Astor Salver in 1969 and 1979, the Hampshire Rose in 1977, was Lancashire champion in 1961, 1962, 1966, 1968, 1973, 1975, 1976, 1977 and 1978, and Northern champion in 1961 and 1962. She was designated Daks Woman Golfer of the year in 1974."
She was Lady Captain of the Club in 1964 and in 1966 her tremendous record of success by that time was marked by a special presentation from the Club and her election as a life member. In 1974 to recognise her further achievements, the Club presented a silver salver on which all her successes are inscribed, which is the Julia Greenhalgh Trophy, played for annually by the ladies and having "Board" status.
The Salver is awarded to the lady returning the lowest 7 card nett aggregate (calculated as the aggregate of nett differentials between the CSS applicable and the nett score returned) in the following events: -
