Mens Board Competitions
Last updated on 12 October 2007
When competitions started in 1892, there were three trophies played for annually, the first winners of which are recorded in the 1892/3 Golfing Annual. These were - The Captain's Medal, which subsequently became the Captain's Prize, the Club Cup, which seems to have been discontinued after 1913 and the Ladies Trophy, which the Committee decided in 1906 should be retained by Dr. R. Hunt, since he had won it so many times.
After this other trophies are listed in the Occurrences Book, with the names of winners recorded in each year, but after 1930, when writing up of the Occurrences Book was discontinued, the competitions for which these trophies were presented seem to have faded away. The Rutherford Cup is first mentioned in 1896 and early in this century saw the introduction of the Lawyers Cup, the Doctors Cup and the Clergy Cup - all played for during various periods up to 1930. The current "board" competitions are : -
The Captain's Prize
This competition was inaugurated in October 1892 as the Captain's Medal of which the first winner on the 12th November 1892 was F. T. Marwood with a score of 110. The competition subsequently followed the same format as the Club Cup - the winners of eight qualifying medal rounds playing for the prize on a round robin match play basis - the trophy going to the player winning the most matches
This format appears to have continued for many years - certainly until 1927. After this, the number qualifying from the medal rounds was increased to 32 who then contested the knock-out stages, the final being played over 36 holes. In 1958, the Captain's Prize was played as a 30 hole medal competition and this arrangement continued for some years.
Since 1976 the practice has been for the incoming captain to decide on the competition for the Captains Prize. The present trophy was originally won in 1923 by Gilbert Marwood and it was given back to the Club in 1963 by Mrs. Muriel Birtwistle (the last surviving member of the Marwood family). Council immediately decided that it should become the trophy for the Captains Prize.

Secretary was instructed to write to Sir John Rutherford, congratulating him as President of the Club upon his winning the St. Leger with his horse Solario and expressing the pleasure it would give to the Committee if he would see his way to offer a cup, to be called the Solario Cup, for competition each year, the Club providing a replica each year for the winner."
