Ged Fury - 25 Years as Pro at Pleasington

In January the club held a presentation in recognition of his 25 years service as Club Professional. Ged is a very unassuming man and doesn’t really seek the limelight but I know he was surprised and honoured to be recognised in this way.

Ged Fury 25 Years Presentation

Unfortunately Ged’s days of being able to play to his own very high standards have sadly gone due to a spinal injury. However it is only right that to mark this occasion we look back on what has been a memorable career, some of the highlights include:

* Played in the Open Championship at Royal Lytham in 1988
* Represented GB&I in the PGA Cup
* Represented England in the European Championship Team
* Played for the winning European Team in the Coughlan Cup (captained by Tony Jacklin MBE)
* European Tour School pre-qualifier winner
* European Tour Player 1999
* Lancashire Open winner 5 times in 1991, 95, 96, 97 & 2000
* Lancashire Matchplay Champion in 1990 & 1993
* Lancashire Strokeplay Champion in 1991 & 1992
* Manx Classic Champion 1989, 2001 & 2004
* Leeds Cup winner in 1993

Open Regional Qualifying:
* In 20 attempts got through to final qualifying on 18 occasions
* Was a combined 14 under par for rounds at Carlisle & Fairhaven x 2 yet was still only a reserve for The Open!!

Course Records:

At some stage Ged held or tied the following course records; Belmont 72 (par), Branston 69 (-3), Ludlow 66 (-5), Castletown 66 (-6), Ashton & Lea 66 (-5), Royal St David’s 66 (-3), North Berwick 65 (-6), Wilpshire 64 (-5), Herons Reach 66 (-6), North Manchester 65 (-6), Darwen 66 (-4), Blackburn 68 (-3), Ulverston 64 (-7) and Crompton & Royton 63 (-7)

Ged has also been readily available to represent the club in events like the Dunham Forest Trophy - he played in the winning side of 2003 - and the Town League. Those captains and team members that have seen Ged play at close quarters know how good he is. Best wishes from all at Pleasington Golf Club.
