Pro-Shop Staff
Pleasington have a record of retaining excellent long standing professionals. In the early years Averell Kidd and Ted McNeill served the club well, with over half a century between them. Ted McNeill was followed by Sandy Wilson, Alex Caygill, who represented Gt. Britain in the Ryder Cup, Mel Hughes and Malcolm Summers. Our present professional, Ged Furey, came to Pleasington from Ludlow Golf Club in 1985 and soon built up a first class reputation. He is now a PGA Advanced Professional, only a few have this achievement in the north.
Ged is a player of the highest calibre, and has competed successfully on the Northern P.G.A. circuit for many years, winning countless major trophy's in the North Region, including the Leeds Cup, and the North Region PGA Championship on 2 occasions. Ged has been the captain of the Lancashire and North Region PGA and has also sewrved on both Committees.
In 1988 Ged finished as runner-up in the National Club Professionals Championship at Harlech, which secured him a place in the Great Britain and Ireland team against the U.S.A. at The Belfry, where he was th highest scoring home player. This is the Club Pros version of the Ryder Cup. He has also played on the European tour and in the British Open.
Club highlights include winning the Volvo Pro/Captain Challenge at Wentworth with Brian Marsden, where he had played all 4 rounds in the PGA Championship that week. The Lombard Top Club with Geoff Wilson at St.Lorenzo in Portugal, and the Hennesy congac finals in Bermuda with Mike Barret and most recently, as a member of the victorious 2003 Dunham Forrest team.
Ged is a well respected teacher, and his teaching talents draw pupils from all over the North and beyond.
